About this picture: djakout, Kompa Festival
The Festival takes place yearly at Bicentennial Park, in downtown Miami, the global center of entertainment, Tourism and Banking.
Compas (also written konpa, kompa or compa) is a Haitian rhythm.
It was created in the fifties by the saxophonist, writer, and band leader, Nemours Jean Baptiste, who called the rhythm compas direk.
It is the result of a fusion between fundamental Haitian rhythms and the merengue of the Dominican Republic.
The definition of compas music has broadened over the years, but it can be described as “a music in which Haiti’s African and European roots converge in a polyrhythmic whole.
